 The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co (“JPMC”) is responsible for providing legal services to the Corporation and is organized by practice groups that generally conform to the Corporation's lines of business (“LOBs”) and corporate staff areas, allowing the legal staff to work closely with specific groups on a daily basis. Consumer Banking Legal is a part of the wider Consumer and Community Banking Legal Group and supports the Firm’s consumer deposit business. Consumer Banking Legal seeks an attorney to join the team.

 

Position Description

The Consumer Banking Legal Practice Group provides a broad array of legal support to the Consumer Banking’s various functions, including Branch. Among other topics, this Practice Group provides legal support for Consumer Banking’s 4800+ physical branches that offer a range of financial products and services to Chase Bank customers across the country.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include supporting Consumer Banking and a number of branch back-office teams that support fiduciary account administration, including trust account matters, powers of attorney, decedent/estate issues, as well as other related matters. The successful candidate will be organized, attentive to detail, exercise sound decision-making, and escalate issues when appropriate.  In addition, the position requires a high level of energy and the ability to thrive in a high-paced, deadline-driven organization, strong teamwork and adaptability are essential, as the timely delivery of high-quality work product is expected. The responsibilities are:

 

  • Develop subject matter expertise and partner collaboratively to support Consumer Branch Banking products and services including Safe Deposit Boxes, Notary, Medallion Signature Guarantees, Decedent Accounts, Power of Attorney, Trusts and other fiduciary account matters.
  • Provide strategic and practical legal advice to branch professionals, as well as to operational areas that support branches;
  • Identify issues and work with team members and business partners to provide solutions;
  • Attend meetings with business partners and provide legal advice on new initiatives;
  • Update and review internal policies and procedures;
  • Assist with legal research into state and federal consumer finance laws or regulations;
  • Draft or edit customer-facing communications;
  • Assist Litigation by liaising with the businesses to provide background on litigation matters;
  • Advise and collaborate with colleagues across the Legal, Risk, Compliance and Controls Departments;
  • Monitor and advise business partners and legal colleagues on relevant legislative and regulatory changes; and 
  • Further the business of the Legal Department by participating in, or leading as appropriate, various projects and initiatives designed to support department-wide priorities.

 

 

Required Skills:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English, with excellent English writing and oral communication skills.
  • Law degree and membership in jurisdictional organization. Attorney candidates must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located prior to commencement of employment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in legal practice.
  • Excellent legal research skills.  
  • A team player who can collaborate and communicate effectively with attorneys and other business and compliance professionals.
  • Strong analytical thinker who is detail-oriented, practical and skilled at issue spotting and problem solving.
  • Self-starter who is able to work independently, takes ownership of responsibilities and projects, is results-oriented and flexible.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work in a fast-paced, complex business environment and maintain communication with attorneys regarding project status and estimated completion timelines.
  • Competence with the suite of Microsoft Office products.
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment. 

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience or interest in financial services regulation.
  • Knowledge of U.S. financial service law and process.
  • Experience studying or working in a common law jurisdiction.
